It’s Oil Change Month by: Marie Newell

Oil is natural. Used motor oil… not so much. It is toxic to both humans and the environment. In honor of our oil change special this month, $85 including oil, oil filter, and labor ($95 for dressers and trikes), we thought we’d give you a little more insight on what oil is all about.

Where does motor oil come from? Well, the quick answer is from the earth… or a lab. Since oil has been used in engines, gear-heads have been trying to improve it. These days, there are three different levels of oil: standard, semi-synthetic, and synthetic. Standard oil is oil from the Earth that has been refined for use in engines. On the other end of the scale is the synthetic – 100% engineered by man to be all that is lacking in the standard. Semi-synthetic is obviously somewhere in the middle.

Regular oil changes are essential in keeping your ride running in peak condition. During oil’s life inside your motor it picks up bi-products like carbons and hydrocarbons, darkening it in appearance and making it toxic to humans and the environment.

Where can it go then? After draining used/old oil into an appropriate container, it can be disposed of in several ways. It can be taken to a recycle center, service station, quick lube or any other location that accepts used oil if it hasn’t been mixed with anything else. You can do a search on earth911.com to find a location near you. It can also be burned, if done properly. Many small businesses, choose to heat their buildings with systems designed specifically to safely and efficiently burn used oil.

If you have any questions about what oil would be best to use in your engine, give us a call, drop by for a chat or write us an email. Be sure to visit us this month to take advantage of our oil change special, we’ll be sure to dispose of your used oil properly and hope you do the same if you do your own maintenance.
