Winter is Upon us! By: Jan Knobbe

Just as our current special states, if you can see your breath, it’s time to come see us.  There is a reason why our November special is a 29 point check.  As cold weather sets in, it is important to go over your ride and put your baby away warm and cozy.  The 29 point check includes:  making sure tires are aired up properly; tank full and with stabilizer in it; battery tender hooked up; etc. etc. etc. 29 items!

Another proper maintenance scheduled item is timing tensioners.  They are made of plastic / bacolite material and they tension the cam chains.  These tensioners have been known to fail anywhere from 9,000 to 64,000 miles.  Harley Davidson recommends checking them every 25k to 35k  miles on spring style (99-06) twin cams and recommendations for hydraulic style (07-12) twin cam models is every 50k miles.  Using synthetic oils, such as Amsoil, will prolong wear of these items, but they are a maintenance item and should be checked.  Failure of the tensioners usually clogs the oil pump and can ruin a motor.

It is also important to clean your bike before storing it for the winter.  Road dirt, grime, dust, pollutants can all lead to corrosion, paint to fade, rubber rot, chrome discoloration.  All nasty stuff!  So wash, wax it, place it under a breathable cover.  We offer bike clean up if you have no time to do this yourself.  It is like putting a high dollar gun away after shooting it.  Cleaned and polished and ready to go!  Come spring or just a nice winters day!
