Engine Upgrades: Then & Now

By Jan Knobbe

As we roll into a new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on just how far engine technology has come since we first opened our doors in 2005. Over the past 19 years, we’ve seen some incredible advancements in the world of engine upgrades, and it’s been a thrill to evolve right alongside them. Let’s take a ride down memory lane and compare the work we were doing back then to the cutting-edge technology we’re using now.

The Early Days: Twin Cam & Evo Engines

Back in the day, it was all about working on twin cam and Evo engines. Engine upgrades typically meant rolling up our sleeves for valve jobs and hand porting. We were turning 88 cubic inch motors into 96 cubic inch beasts, or bumping 96 cubic inches up to 103. And when we went big, we were cranking out builds that maxed out at 110 or 117 cubic inches.

At the time, these were solid, reliable upgrades that delivered the extra power riders were chasing. But compared to what we’re doing now? Let’s just say, the game has changed.

Modern Muscle: Twin Cam & M8 Evolution

Fast forward to today, and we’re diving into a whole new world of possibilities with twin cams and Milwaukee-Eights (M8s). The technology has come a long way, and so have the results.

These days, upgrades often include CNC porting for heads, big valves, and advanced camshaft designs. Tools like airflow benches let us measure airflow with pinpoint precision, helping us get the most out of every build. Camshaft technology, in particular, has made massive strides. Today’s cams allow for better airflow in and out of the cylinders and duration that allows the exhaust valves to stay open longer to cool the exhaust chambers but also increases horsepower and torque—without requiring higher-octane fuel.

When it comes to M8s, we’re talking serious performance. Their two-over and four-over valves, paired with CNC porting heads, nearly double the airflow of factory heads. Add to that their single-cam configuration, which reduces drag in the cam chest, and you’ve got a recipe for freeing up horsepower in ways we couldn’t have imagined 15 years ago.  In addition, crank shaft balancing, welding, plugging and windowing drop weight off the crank assembly making rotational inertia much less allowing the motor to rev more freely.

How Big Can We Go?

With M8s, the standard upgrades are no joke. A 107 cubic inch motor can jump to 124 cubic inches, and a 114 or 117 can climb to 128. These upgrades aren’t just for show—they’re dependable, everyday riders. (Trust us, we’ve tested them on our own bikes.)

But if you really want to go big, we’re talking about builds that exceed 155 cubic inches. Years ago, an 88 cubic inch motor built up to 96 would put out about 95 horsepower. Now? Factory motors start at 107 or 114 cubic inches, already making 100 horsepower out of the gate. And with upgrades, we’re hitting 155 cubic inches and seeing 200 horsepower at the ground.

And for the gearheads out there? Yes, pro chargers and turbochargers are very much on the table.

Staying Ahead of the Curve

One thing that hasn’t changed over the years is our commitment to staying on top of the latest innovations. The evolution of engine technology is constant—there’s always a smarter, better way to gain horsepower—and we make it our mission to stay ahead of the curve.

Every rider has different needs, and we pride ourselves on working with you to find the perfect fit for your bike. Whether you’re looking for a dependable daily driver or a full-on powerhouse street or race build, we’ve got the experience and the tools to make it happen.

Why Camp Hope?

By: Reine Knobbe

Our Fall Fest Motorcycle Show has been raising funds for Camp Hope in Farmington, MO for years. There are numerous veterans organizations that we could raise funds for. All worthy causes indeed! So what Camp Hope?

A vet recommended Camp Hope to us as we had not heard of them. After doing a bit of research and visiting their facility, we were hooked! As an occupational therapist, I was impressed with the facility’s commitment to making sure the lodge and cabins on the property are all ADA-accessible. They have track-wheeled wheelchairs to get vets out into the woods who are unable to use the side-by-sides or four-wheelers; deer stands that are wheelchair accessible; and miles and miles of trails.  They provide guides for veterans who need extra support. I love the example of guides helping blind vets hunt!

I spoke with Roy Hunter, one of the board members at Camp Hope, to find out what improvements they have been able to complete over the last several years. Roy said they have been able to accomplish much including:  a 40’ x 100’ metal building to house all their big equipment such as tractor, lawn mowers, side by sides etc; a loft was added to the building to store all the paper products and other supplies needed to host veterans; they stripped all the old stain off the lodge and cabins to help preserve the buildings along with a regular maintenance contract to preserve the buildings. This past year they replaced a bridge on the property that was washing out annually during heavy rain storms.  It is now longer, taller and has more pipes under it to keep it from washing out. Their next big project is to pave the parking area. It will make the annual motorcycle poker run, which is held the fourth Saturday in August, easier for motorcyclists to get in and out of the parking lot. August 23, 2025 for those of you that like to mark your calendars!

Roy and his wife Mendi stated that it is very rewarding to volunteer at Camp Hope. They receive letters from vets telling them that being at Camp Hope is life changing for them.  They have even received bullets “literally bullets”, Roy emphasized, from vets that were going down that path of suicide. Camp Hope does just that, giving vets hope for the future. Our veterans face atrocities most of us cannot fathom. Camp Hope is a place veterans can come together for healing. It is not easy transitioning back to civilian life. Camp Hope does so much more than just getting veterans back out to hunt in our great Missouri outdoors.

For more information about Camp Hope please visit their website HERE.

You can also talk to Mendi and Roy at our Fall Fest Motorcycle Show on October 12th. They will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

Best Fall Rides In Missouri

Fall is my favorite time of year!  We are blessed to live in a state that has such breathtaking beauty.  I look forward to the cooler temperatures and changing leaves.  I hope that you are able to get out and travel this fall to enjoy the vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold.  We have included a couple of Illinois routes also.

In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the best places to ride motorcycles in Missouri and Illinois this fall, ensuring that you make the most of this fantastic season.

1. Ozark Mountain Highways:

The Ozark Mountains are a haven for motorcyclists, and fall transforms this region into a breathtaking tapestry of colors. Starting in Springfield, head south on Highway 125 towards Bradleyville. This route takes you through the Mark Twain National Forest, where you’ll witness a stunning display of fall foliage while enjoying the secure feel of your new grips. Continue on Highway 76, known as the “Music Highway,” for a melodic journey through Branson, and cap it off with a ride along the winding Highway 165, offering panoramic views of Table Rock Lake.

2. The Great River Road In Illinois:

For a scenic route along the mighty Mississippi River, ride along the Great River Road. Begin Alton and head north to Grafton along Illinois Route 100.. As you follow the river’s meandering path, you’ll be treated to views of changing leaves and towering bluffs. Be sure to take one of the ferries back to enjoy being on the river, if only for a moment in time!  This route ensures a comfortable and safe ride, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the season.

3. Rolling Hills of the Missouri Wine Country:

Missouri’s wine country, centered around the town of Hermann, offers a picturesque setting for a fall ride. Start your journey in St. Charles and take Highway 94 along the Missouri River. As you traverse this route, you’ll encounter vineyards and wineries amidst rolling hills, making it a perfect opportunity for wine tasting and relaxation.

4. Little Grand Canyon:

Head to Shawnee National Forest and check out the Little Grand Canyon.  There are several ways to get there, but Illinois Route 3 runs through some quaint small towns.  Make sure you plan for time to take a hike in the Little Grand Canyon.  The views are amazing!

5.  Scenic Highway 19:

If you’re seeking a route that showcases the heart of the Ozarks, Scenic Highway 19 is your go-to choice. Begin in Cuba and head south towards Eminence. This road takes you through the Mark Twain National Forest, where you’ll encounter rugged hills, crystal-clear rivers, and, of course, the stunning autumn foliage. Don’t forget to explore the well-known Alley Spring and Mill, a picturesque stop on your journey.

6. Gateway to the Ozarks:

For those in the Kansas City area, the Gateway to the Ozarks route offers a taste of the scenic southern Missouri countryside. Start in Harrisonville and take Highway 7 south towards Clinton. From there, follow Highway 13 through the rolling hills, forests, and charming towns of the Ozarks. This route is especially captivating as the leaves change colors!

In Conclusion

Fall in Missouri and Illinois is a motorcyclist’s dream come true. The combination of winding roads, breathtaking scenery, and charming towns makes these states top destinations for riders during the autumn season. Whether you’re exploring the Ozark Mountains, tracing the Mississippi River, savoring wine country delights, or cruising through the heart of the Ozarks, Missouri and Illinois have something special to offer every motorcycle enthusiast.

Before you embark on this journey, make sure to replace your worn handlebar grips with fresh ones for a better grip and comfort. So, gear up, hit the road with your fresh handlebar grips, and make the most of this splendid season as you ride through the best places to experience fall’s beauty on two wheels. Happy riding!

Enhance Your Riding Experience & Customize Your Suspension

Hey there! At Chariots of Fire Customs LLC, we know that hopping on your motorcycle is all about embracing freedom, adventure, and pure exhilaration. But let’s be honest, a truly unforgettable ride isn’t just about the engine power or that sleek design. It’s also about how smooth and comfortable the ride feels. That’s why we’re super excited to talk about something that can make a massive difference: a customized motorcycle suspension.

Understanding Motorcycle Suspension Basics:

Unlocking your bike’s true potential starts with the suspension system. The problem with stock suspension is that it’s usually either too rigid or too soft because it’s not specifically tailored to you. But don’t worry, we’ve got your back. Here are a few things to keep in mind when adjusting your motorcycle suspension:

– Tailor-Made for You: Choose shocks that are designed for your weight and riding style. Don’t forget to account for your passenger if you often ride together. A well-matched suspension will make your ride much more comfortable and enjoyable.

– Dampening for Smoothness: Adjustable dampening is key to finding the perfect balance between comfort and performance. Look for shocks that let you fine-tune the suspension to your liking, ensuring a smooth ride over any bumps or imperfections.

– Trusted Brands: Quality and reliability are paramount. Go for shocks from brands you trust, those with a proven track record. You deserve a suspension system that performs exceptionally well and lasts long.

Customizing your motorcycle suspension means you can glide over bumps and maintain control effortlessly. No more battling a poorly adjusted suspension! Instead, you’ll feel energized and ready to conquer those long rides you’ve been dreaming of – like the iconic Sturgis Motorcycle Rally!

The Joy of Riding Together

Riding is always more fun when shared with a passenger. A customized suspension not only enhances your ride but also makes it better for your companion. Imagine those trips you could take together, with the added smoothness and comfort of a well-adjusted suspension. Each mile you ride deepens your connection and creates unforgettable moments.

Tips For Riding Cool This Summer

As we transition from the chilly winter to the warm embrace of summer, adjusting to the change in weather is essential, especially for those long rides. While it’s tempting to shed layers for comfort, it’s crucial to remember that “riding cool” doesn’t mean stripping down completely!

Here are some detailed tips to help you beat the heat while cruising on your bike this summer:

1. Hydration is Key: Keep yourself hydrated throughout your ride. Always carry water with you and drink regularly to replenish fluids lost through perspiration. Consider investing in a Hydration Pack for convenient access to water on the go.

2. Choose the Right Gear: Opt for ventilated and cooling outer gear that offers protection from the sun while allowing heat to escape through ventilation. Visit our shop to explore our selection of summer gear designed to keep you comfortable and safe.

3. Time Your Rides Wisely: Avoid riding during the peak heat hours, typically between 12 PM and 5 PM. Opt for early morning or late evening rides when the temperature is cooler and more comfortable. If you must ride during hot times, stay hydrated and take regular breaks to prevent heat-related issues.

4. Utilize Helmet Vents: Make use of the vents in your helmet to allow airflow and regulate temperature. If you’re unsure how to open your helmet vents or if your helmet lacks proper ventilation, don’t hesitate to seek assistance from our knowledgeable staff. We’re here to help you find a helmet that keeps you cool and protected.

With these tips in mind, we hope you can enjoy your summer rides while staying cool and safe on the road. Feel free to reach out to us for any further assistance or questions you may have!

Our Favorite Rides

by:  Reine Knobbe

Spring is here and the riding season is in full swing!  The topic came up at lunch last week of what our favorite rides are.  Thought I’d share them with you all.  If you get the opportunity to run one or all of these, let us know if you liked the routes.

First route is from our tech, Rick.  This is one of his favorite all day rides.  So make sure you have a full tank of gas before setting out!  From wherever you are at, head to Hwy 19 south, follow Hwy 19 south to Hwy 32 in Salm, MO.  Turn left heading east on Hwy 32, travel east until you come into the little town of Biby, MO.  Stop and enjoy breakfast or lunch at Bixby Country Store (2569 Hwy 32, Bixby, phone 573-626-4868) where you can eat in the restaurant or dine in a rail car or caboose.  Bridget, the owner, is a wonderful lady who will treat you like family.

After filling up your stomach and fueling up your tank, head east on 32.  You will then turn left on Hwy DD, toward Council Bluff Lake.  Definitely stop and take in the views of the lake and campgrounds.  Then head north on DD, when ending at Hwy C, merge right then turn left on Hwy P.  Take caution with the twisties and follow north to Potosi, MO.  When you come into town at Hwy B, turn left and follow B through town.  Merge right heading north onto 185.  Take 185 which is full of hills and turns and beautiful scenic views.  Stay on 185 north until you come to Hwy 100 in Washington, MO.  Then find your way home from there.  Enjoy!

Second route is from Frankie in the parts department.  This is a shorter ride, but a great way to clear your head!  He heads south on Hwy W just off of Hwy 61 south of Troy.  Take W to Foristell over Hwy 70, jog right then left onto Hwy T.  Follow T to TT, Frankie’s favorite back roads.  Take TT to Dutzow and make a right on Hwy 47.  Stop in Twin Gables (101 MO 47, Marthasville) for food and drinks.  Continue Hwy 47 north to Hawk Point and then Troy and then on home.

Hmmm, I’m trying to think of a ride that you may not have gone on, but it is hard because there are so many fantastic local roads to ride on!  So this one from me, Reine.  Since the other two took you south, how about north east?  From Troy take Hwy 47 east then left onto Hwy W.  Take Hwy W north all the way to Clarksville.  Left onto 79 into Louisiana.  Stop and top off your tank if you haven’t done so already.  Right onto Hwy 54 and go east to Atlas, IL.  Go right onto Hwy 96 east.  Keep an eye out to stay on Hwy 96 as it makes a left (don’t go to Hamburg).  Take Hwy 96 to Kampsville.  Make a right onto Hwy 100 south.  Stop in Hardin at the Illinois Riverdock Restaurant (501 S Park St, Hardin, IL).  Skip a heavy lunch and go straight for the pie!  When you leave, go right the way you road in and then go right over the bridge to continue on Hwy 100 south to Grafton, IL.  Stop at your favorite local bar for a drink.  We tend to head over to the Loading Dock, but there are multiple places to choose from.  Head south to Alton, IL.  Cross over the bridge back into MO.  We like to pick up Hwy 94 on the right.  It’s not too far up the road after going over the bridge.  Hwy 94 runs through the bottom lands through Orchard Farm and Boschertown.  Head home from there!  Just one way to run it.  You could take one of the river fairies back also.

I can’t wait to ride!  I’m definitely going to Bixby Country Store this year.  See you on the open road!  Blessings, peace out, Reine
