Spring Riding Preparedness: Get Back on the Road the Right Way

Blog

The weather’s breaking. The roads are calling. And after a few months off, it’s time to get back in the saddle.

But before you twist the throttle and take off like nothing’s changed, let’s be real, spring riding isn’t the same as mid-season riding. Your bike’s been sitting. Your reflexes might be a little rusty. And the road conditions? They’re unpredictable at best.

At Chariots of Fire Customs, we don’t just want you riding, we want you riding safe, confident, and in control.

Here’s how to do it right.

Start with T-CLOCS: Your Pre-Ride Check

Before your first real ride, run through a T-CLOCS inspection. It’s simple, fast, and can prevent serious problems.

T-CLOCS stands for:

  • Tires & Wheels – Check tread, pressure, and look for cracks or dry rot
  • Controls – Make sure cables, levers, and throttle move smoothly
  • Lights & Electrical – Test headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and battery
  • Oil & Fluids – Check levels and look for leaks
  • Chassis – Inspect suspension, frame, and fasteners
  • Stands – Make sure your kickstand and springs are solid

If anything feels off, don’t ignore it. Small issues turn into big ones fast, especially at highway speeds.

Watch the Road—Spring Conditions Are Different

Winter leaves its mark behind.

Spring roads come with:

  • Loose gravel from snow treatment
  • Potholes that weren’t there last season
  • Debris washed onto the road
  • Slick spots from rain and temperature swings

Even familiar routes can surprise you.

Take corners slower than you normally would. Give yourself extra braking distance. Stay alert for changes in traction, especially in shaded areas where moisture sticks around longer.

The road hasn’t fully settled yet. Ride like it.

Ease Back Into Riding

After a few months off, your muscle memory isn’t as sharp as it was last fall, and that’s normal.

Don’t jump straight into aggressive riding or long-distance trips.

Start with:

  • Short, controlled rides
  • Lower speeds
  • Familiar roads

Use those first rides to get comfortable again—feel your bike, your throttle control, your braking. Pay attention to how your bike responds after sitting for the winter.

Confidence comes back quickly, but only if you give it time.

Practice Your Skills Again

Even experienced riders benefit from a reset.

Take a few minutes in a parking lot and run through the basics:

  • Slow-speed turns
  • Controlled stops
  • Throttle and clutch control
  • Emergency braking

It doesn’t take long, but it makes a difference. Practicing now can prevent mistakes later, especially in unexpected situations.

Think of it as a warm-up before the season really starts.

Ride Defensive—Always

Spring traffic is unpredictable. Not just because of road conditions, but because of drivers.

A lot of people aren’t used to seeing motorcycles again yet.

That means:

  • They may not check for you
  • They may misjudge your speed
  • They may not see you at all

Ride like you’re invisible.

Keep space between you and other vehicles. Watch intersections carefully. Assume drivers will make mistakes, and be ready to react.

Defensive riding isn’t optional. It’s how you stay riding.

Don’t Skip Service

If your bike sat all winter, now’s the time to make sure everything is dialed in.

Fluids break down. Batteries weaken. Tires age. Small issues can develop without you noticing.

If you haven’t already, schedule a service check to make sure your bike is ready for the demands of the season.

Start the Season the Right Way

Spring riding is one of the best parts of the year, but it’s also when riders are most at risk. Rusty skills, unpredictable roads, and overlooked maintenance all come into play.

Take your time. Check your bike. Ride smart.
