Our Drag rep, Todd, came out and gave Ally and I a demonstration on several motorcycle helmets. Specifically, Z1R and Icon brands. As he was showing us the cool features on several full-face helmets, like vents; space to pop-in a communication system; how to size etc., he mentioned MIPS. The Icon brand has MIPS technology in the Airform Counterstrike model.
What? Never heard of it. New technology to protect your noggin? Do tell!
MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System.
“It’s a technology designed to reduce rotational motion during angled impacts, potentially lessening the risk of brain injury, according to MIPS”.
Why are motorcycle helmet advancements important?
Your brain can twist inside the skull, especially with an angled impact. The MIPS helmets have a low-friction layer which allows the helmet to move slightly (10-15mm) independently of the head during an angled impact which helps to redirect rotational energy away from the brain. By reducing rotational motion you minimize the risk of brain injuries. For the curious, you can learn more by watching the YouTube video below:
Todd let me know that he expects to see more helmets come out with the MIPS technology in the future. It’s nice to know about new technologies as they hit the market. As always, let us know if you see an emerging tech or trend and we’ll research it before stocking at our shop.
Blessings & Peace Out,
